Important Mammogram Info
Mammogram Screening
It is important for women over the age of 40 to partake in regular mammogram screenings (yearly). For women of average risk, The American Cancer Society suggests receiving annual mammograms starting at age 45, but they could start as early as 40 years of age. Women with a family history of breast cancer, a genetic mutation associated with breast cancer, or other risk factors may want to start screening earlier. Catching cancer in the early stages improves the likelihood of successful treatment.
Mammograms must be done 1 year and 1 day after the previous Mammogram. Most insurance will only cover exams because it is a preventive exam. If a patient is Self-Pay, then they can have the exam once a year, no matter the month. Patients need to have an order in hand so we can send results to a doctor unless they’d like to be a “self-referral.”
Diagnostic Mammograms
Diagnostic mammograms are performed when there is continuous and persistent pain, redness, a lump, discharge, or other concerns that need to be evaluated. They are also done after irregular findings in a routine screening mammogram. An order/referral is needed for a diagnostic. A call-back mammogram is a diagnostic mammogram done RECENTLY in another facility.
Please inform our front desk staff:
- Why is your doctor sending you for this study?
- Did you have A RECENT (within a month) exam done in another facility? If the answer is yes, please help us by asking for those images from the previous facility.
- Please bring the results of your recent exam on the day of the study, as it helps our doctors perform your diagnostic mammogram in the shortest amount of time possible.
Please note that most mammograms need a referral, but a screening over 40 can be done as a self-referral.
Breast Ultrasounds
- If the referring physician requested the patient to have a breast ultrasound along with a mammogram, the mammogram needs to be done first.
- If you have an Ultrasound breast order but you have not been seen for your mammogram in more than a year, please also Schedule a Screening Mammogram.

How to Prepare for Your 3D Mammogram in El Paso
Please wear comfortable clothes and bring your ID, Insurance card, and referral.
Before arriving for your mammogram, do not apply lotion, body powder, or cream to the chest. These can interfere with the accuracy of the test. You may stay on your normal diet and medications.
Mammograms use low doses of X-ray radiation, which is typically safe but not advisable in some situations. Pregnant women or women who believe they may be pregnant should notify their doctor, as the radiation from the exam could harm the fetus.
You will be asked to fill out a Mammography (MAMMO) questionnaire before your exam. When it is time to conduct your exam, you will be given a hospital gown to wear. You will also need to remove all jewelry or any other items that may interfere with the test. When you schedule your appointment, you will receive instructions on how best to prepare.
